Dr. Frederic K. Scott died Sunday, May 24, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Canton on July 9, 1941, to Victor and Rachael Scott, Italian immigrants. Fred grew up on West Tuscarawas Avenue, living with his sister Vicki above Scott’s Tavern, the family’s business. He attended Canton St. Joseph Elementary School and ran the neighborhood with his cousins, as well as several boys who would become lifelong friends. They would often spend holidays and special occasions at the tavern where they all learned about the Italian traditions of hospitality, food, and family. He was especially proud to join Boy Scout Troop 16 at St. Joseph, to earn his Eagle rank and fifth year pipestone, and he remained a Troop 16 committee member and supporter for the rest of his life. Fred attended Canton Central Catholic High School, played in the marching band, and graduated in 1959. He continued his education at the University of Notre Dame where he chaired the charity boxing tournament, the Bengal Bouts, and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology. He enrolled at Western Reserved Dental School in Cleveland and, while a first year dental student, visited Canton to attend the McKinley-Massillon football game. He spied Nancy Saxen in a concession line, and his friends coaxed him to go talk to the girl that he had taken to the junior prom and never called back. They married in August 1965 and celebrated 51 years of marriage before Nancy passed away in 2016. After graduating from Western Reserve in 1967, Fred completed a one year anesthesiology residency in Cleveland and then established his own dental practice in Canton where he worked for over 50 years. He took great joy in getting to know his patients, especially when second, third, and even fourth generations sought his care. And he had the special joy of working for several years with his son, Dr. John Scott, before John passed away in 2019. Fred loved people and social activities. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club of Canton, the Knights of Columbus, Council 341, the Monsignor Graham Assembly, and the Stark County Dental Society. He was a parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, where he especially enjoyed singing and cantoring at mass with the Archangel Ensemble praise and worship choir. He also spent many years as a volunteer at the Players Guild of Canton, most often assisting the Youth Theater, where he excelled in several “dad” roles. He is survived by sons Frederic R. (Arleen) Scott and Victor Michael Scott, daughter-in-law, Stacey Scott, grandchildren, Keagan, Preston, Madison, and Spencer Scott, sister Victoria (James) Conley, and a large extended family. Friends and family will be received on Monday, June 1, from 4-7 p.m. at Wackerly Funeral Home. A Mass of Chirstian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 2, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church with Fr. Benson Opkara as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family extends a special thanks to the staff of the Memory Care Unit at the Inn at Whitewood Village, where during the last year of his life, Fred was shown kindness, compassion, and much love. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Dr. John S. Scott Charitable Fund (a nonprofit corporation that supports scouters in need) in care of Wackerly Funeral Home.
