Gene Apple Obituary

 

Gene E. Apple, 89, died Monday, November 22, 2021.  He was born in West Lafayette,

Ohio on November 4, 1932 to the late William L. and Mary Elizabeth (McGregor) Apple.  He was raised by his grandparents, the late Thomas N. and Lucille Magness. Mr. Apple attended Muskingum College and received his BS degree from Kent State University and MA from Rutgers University.  He completed additional graduate work at the University of Akron.  He taught in the Cuyahoga Falls public schools.  After serving in the US Army Signal Corps, he taught in Long Branch, NJ.  His administrative career began as the principal of Lincoln School in Coshocton, Ohio from 1959-1964 and while there he was an adjunct professor at Muskingum College.  Joining the Plain Local School District in 1964, he retired as the assistant superintendent in 1984 and was a part-time instructor at the University of Akron from 1984 to 2000.  From 2000 to 2008 Mr. Apple was employed by the Stark County Educational Service Center as a consultant in the Early Childhood Division. Mr. Apple belonged to and held offices in many professional organizations including life memberships in the Ohio and Stark County Retired Teachers Associations.  He served on the Walsh College Advisory Council and was a member of the Youngstown Diocese Board of Education.  Mr. Apple also served on the Stark County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities as well as the board of the Friends of the Stark County District Library and was a member of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mr. Apple was preceded in death by his partner of 40 years, Angelo (Joey) Markino.  He is survived by two daughters:  Julie Wheeler of Louisville, OH and Pam (Ralph Jr.)  Sievert of Minneapolis, MN.  He is also survived by three grandchildren:  Ralph (Clare) Sievert III, Martin (Jenny) Sievert and Mary (Alex) Clausen, as well as four great grandchildren: Sloane, George and Victor Clausen and Wade Sievert. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Canton with the Very Reverend John E. Sheridan, S.T.L Rector as celebrant. Burial will be at Fairfield Cemetery in West Lafayette, Ohio.  Friends may call Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Wackerly Funeral Home Canton.
