Mary Kousaie
Mary passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, following a brief illness. She was born in Two Hills, Alberta, Canada, to the late Michael and Anne Samoil. In August, 2024, Mary achieved the memorable goal of turning 100 years “young.” However, her stamina, vitality and zest for life amazingly belied her age.
As a young woman in Canada, Mary played on traveling softball and basketball teams, much like modern AAU teams. Mary met her late husband, George W. Kousaie, during WWII, while he was on leave from the U. S. Army in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Following the war, Mary returned to Canton with George, where they raised three children, Michael, Sheila and Lauree.
Employed over twenty years by Stark County District Library, Mary lived most of her life in the Canton area. Her hobbies included baking and cooking and she not only prepared dishes from her own Ukrainian culture but also created delicious meals and baked goods from Middle-Eastern cuisine, as well. Every meal was an adventure in her kitchen for her family to savor.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George, of Canton, and her parents and brother, John, of Alberta, Canada. She is survived by her sister, Catherine, of Edmonton, son, Michael (Linda), of Medina, daughter, Sheila (Jimmy), of Paris, OH, and daughter Lauree (John), of North Canton. Mary is also survived by five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Services to be conducted by Fr. Michael Corbin at 1:30 Friday, Feb. 14, at Wackerly Funeral Home in Canton, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, in Canton.
